for new Woodland Community Primary School and Nursery MONODRAUGHT HAS WORKED WITH EDUCATIONAL BUILDING CONSULTANCY AND APPROVED DCSF ADVISOR NPS NORTH WEST TO SPECIFY AND INSTALL WINDCATCHER NATURAL VENTILATION SYSTEMS AND SUNPIPE NATURAL DAYLIGHT SYSTEMS FOR THE NEW WOODLAND COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL IN ROCHDALE.

W

oodland Community Primary School, Rochdale is an amalgamation of three primary

schools – Moss Field, Darnhill and Bullough Moor – with a capacity for 420 children, including 26 places in a Surestart Centre nursery class. The new school, which is housed in a new building, provides child care and education for children up to the age of 12.

BREEAM is now playing a major part in School design and it is a fundamental requirement by the DCSF that all new build and refurbished School Projects do undergo a BREEAM and Environmental Energy Assessment, and they must achieve no less than a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating. Rochdale Council Schools Service and its consultants NPS North West are acutely

PUBLIC SECTOR REVIEW

aware of these requirements and both are, in any event, keen to address sustainability issues that arise during the planning of any new school building, as Terry Blackburn of NPS explains.

“The use of natural solutions is actively promoted within current regulations applying to Building Schools for the Future, so Monodraught Windcatcher natural ventilation systems and Sunpipe natural day lighting systems were included in the specification and approved by the council. We have used Monodraught products on a number of projects over the years, so we worked closely with its engineering team to establish where Windcatcher natural ventilation and SunPipe natural daylight systems should be used, in a school that features both single- and two- storey buildings.”
