Being Framework’ and the new sports and active living strategy "Inspiring an Active Jersey‘' will finally give us the tools to ensure that the public of Jersey have the best opportunities to stay fit and healthy throughout their lifetimes. But - and it’s a big but - the States Assembly and Council of Ministers will need to support the necessary funding to ensure progress can be made. It is my hope that as Jersey is recognized as a jurisdiction that is focusing on prevention and early intervention to reduce ill health and improve the quality of life for islanders, we will also be seen as an attractive place to attract new events and grow sports tourism.

There are also many other sports that can contribute to growing tourism in Jersey. The Government Plan, recently approved by the States, included funding for a new skatepark at a site yet to be determined. With skateboarding and BMX biking included at this year’s Olympics in Japan, I believe there is going to be an explosion in interest in both these sports internationally. This would be particularly so if Jersey BMX rider, Alex Coleborn, makes the GB team for the Olympics as he is aiming to do. The building of a new, modern, fit-for-purpose skatepark in the island will not only provide better opportunities for locals to take up the sport and develop their skills, it will

potentially attract interest from outside the island. New local events could attract competitors from further afield if we can build something well-designed and exciting.

There are other opportunities from making more of the depth of talent and experience

That is just one watersport in which Jersey and its athletes excel, there is also sailing, windsurfing, long-distance swimming and canoeing that have a long, proud history in Jersey. Although opportunities exist for locals to train and compete in these watersports, there is no safe dedicated area that currently accommodates them both for competition and training. In a previous edition of 20/20 magazine I suggested creating a water sports park along with new deep-water moorings at St. Catherines. That could be achieved by extending the breakwater to the south to create a sheltered body of water where watersports enthusiasts could both compete and train. Creating one of Europe’s biggest water sports parks would be a tremendous boost to tourism and without a major impact on the environment. As an Island we have to be bold if we are to make the most of our natural environment and make the much- needed and long overdue improvements in our sports infrastructure to the benefit of sports enthusiasts, sports tourism and the entire community.
