Some questions for Sonja

Question: What do you do to unwind at the end of a long day? Answer: In my ideal world that unfortunately doesn’t happen often enough, I enjoy doing Pilates or yoga, read a book and sip on a nighty night tea whilst soothing into a relaxing candle light sense.

Question: What do you like most about being a Pilates instructor? Answer: I like being able to improve my clients’ mobility and flexibility and strengthen their weaker muscles. I enjoy seeing positive changes in postures and I absolutely adore the vibe that you get when your body, soul and mind become one.

The quiet, relaxed surroundings, being around adults that listen to you, trust you and follow you without any moaning and resistance is also pretty refreshing for a mum of three

grabbing a couple more girls and taking them to their gymnastics lessons. In between waiting on the girls to finish their class and supervising my toddler, I get a minute to answer e-mails, messages, get lost in social media whilst sipping a hot and re-energizing coffee. By the time I drop everyone home and collect my middle boy from a friend’s house it’s already 17:30 p.m. Time for daddy to arrive home too. I finish off the dinner and we all sit down together. Then it’s mayhem in the house with screaming and running children, Play-Doh being thrown everywhere, the dog chewing on important Lego pieces that we can’t live without, and milk being spilt all over the sofa.....

I suddenly get this amazing urge to educate my kids (which I almost always regret), suggesting (which always turns into forcing them) to read to me. Owen, who is in Year One, is so great at reading that I’m ready to sell him. Pheobe’s reading in German, Russian and English is much more enjoyable, probably because it could be Chinese but she just gets on with it. I often can’t hear it anyway, because my middle son calls out ten different words for a simple two letter word 'it'. And my toddler... oops, where is my toddler??

Oh, there he is in the bathroom, looking very angelic, squeezing toothpaste down the sink and pushing it down with his toothbrush (I found three toothbrushes blocking the drain last week), and innocently sticking tampons into a bottle of water and decorating the walls with slip liners. This child never gets tired and can do all of this whilst going for a “pee”.....

After the kids are in bed, I look around and my house looks like a bomb has hit and destroyed it in literally an hour. But it’s finally 19:00 p.m. and bedtime! By the time I get everyone in bed, I’m ready for my own, but after tidying up, I collapse on the sofa and watch some T.V. and catch up with the day with hubby. My Wednesday night usually finishes around 21:00 p.m.

That’s my very exciting and busy life and I’m also incredibly grateful to be able to teach Pilates; however, I wonder who needs my Pilates classes more, me or my clients!

Question: What do you most dislike about being a Pilates instructor? Answer: Teaching people who are concentrating more on comparing themselves to others rather then concentrating on themselves and reaching their own personal goals. It is frustrating working with clients who deal with a lot of insecurities but don’t allow me or themselves to improve through their Pilates experience.

Question: How did you become a Pilates instructor? Answer: I qualified in Pilates and Personal Training and other fitness courses because to me it seemed to be the closest thing to Physiotherapy. This is what I’m passionate about, the physical body and all it’s got to offer.

Question: What advice would you give someone who is just starting their career, who wants to be a Pilates instructor?

Answer: Find your style, stay true to yourself and your beliefs and don’t be afraid to shine. Believe in yourself and do what you love. I know so many Pilates instructors over here and they are all gorgeous, kind and helpful souls, so it’s a very positive, friendly environment to work in.
