broadband network to all homes and businesses, and the way it’s putting digital at the heart of its economy. Tony Moretta, CEO of Digital Jersey, considers whether people back in the island realise quite how good we have it.

n acquaintance sent a tweet on Sunday morning. He lives in Jersey but was in Edinburgh at the time, and wrote: ‘We really take our full-fibre network for granted in Jersey. I’m back in Edinburgh for a few days and it looks like it’ll take hours to install a MacOS update on my laptop that would take minutes back home.’


I had a few immediate thoughts reading that.


1. He’s correct. 2. It’s great he realised it and said so. 3. I suspect many people in Jersey, including me, take for granted our digital infrastructure.


We benefit, every moment of every day, from full-fibre broadband to every property in the island. To put that into some kind of perspective; the latest independent testing listed Jersey the third fastest for average internet speeds on the planet, behind only Taiwan and Singapore.


Let me put that another way. The slowest broadband package people in Jersey can choose to access is faster than the fastest available to billions elsewhere in the world. As people who live here, we’re incredibly lucky.


But that also presents a very special opportunity for Jersey to position itself as somewhere incredibly attractive for those looking for the ideal testbed location
