How has the Listening Lounge been received by islanders?

In the first five weeks that the service was available we saw 115 Islanders, with around a quarter of these becoming regular attendees. For me this demonstrates just how crucial it was that we got this project off the ground – imagine how many Islanders we will be able to support throughout 2020. I am pleased that we are achieving what we set out to achieve but it is also magnifying and highlighting several other challenges faced by members of our community that urgently need addressing – the issue of isolation for example.

management of LINC, and as a qualified Mental Health First Aid instructor, I also oversee training. I am passionate about raising awareness of mental health, tackling the stigma and improving access to mental health and wellbeing support in Jersey.

How has your role at LINC, LV care Group’s mental health and wellbeing division, developed over the last three years?

I joined LINC in 2016 as the group was looking to offer these important services to their current clients, primarily those in residential and care homes and elderly islanders in the community. However, it soon became evident that there were gaps in the mental health and wellbeing services available to all islanders and that’s when we decided to broaden our remit.

What services does LINC offer? We offer a range of mental health and wellbeing services for both adults and young people from our centrally located Wellbeing Hub. These services include counselling, psychotherapy, peer support, training including Mental Health First Aid regulated by Ofqual, SilverCloud (online therapy), mindfulness and yoga. We also offer our services to corporates too, undertaking ‘lunch and learn’ sessions, company-wide wellness audits and developing mental health and wellbeing strategies. Our team is multi- disciplinary and includes mental health nurses, counsellors, psychotherapists, mindfulness and yoga practitioners, and peer workers. As an organisation we hold membership with the British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy. Our team also hold individual registration with appropriate professional bodies.

The Listening Lounge sounds like an interesting project – tell us more? The Listening Lounge is a physical space that is informal and welcoming with comfortable seating and private rooms. It aims to improve access to support for islanders, improve outcomes and reduce the demand and utilisation of other services that are currently struggling to meet the needs of the community.

Islanders, aged 18 and over, can receive walk-in support by dropping in at the Listening Lounge between 10.00 a.m. and 10.00 p.m. everyday and access services such as counselling, bibliotherapy and online therapy. However, if islanders prefer, they can call ahead and make a private

What do you think is the key to success for Listening Lounge? We are offering recovery-focused services through our peer support workers – those who have faced mental health challenges themselves who then draw on that experience to support others. This approach is becoming increasingly prevalent around the world in the delivery of mental health services and I’m proud that we are leading the way in Jersey with this combined ‘expert by profession and expert by experience’ approach. I am also keen to continue to develop a multi agency approach, integrating more services into the project by working with the voluntary sector. In the past we have worked in silos – this new approach is very exciting and certainly delivers the best possible support to those who need it.
