Photograph by Neil Sandland IS JERSEY PAYING LIP SERVICE TO SPORTS TOURISM?

You have to question whether Jersey has been as successful as it could have been in either attracting new sporting events or promoting and staging the events that already make up our sporting calendar.

By Senator Steve Pallett, Assistant Minister for Economic Development, Tourism, Sport and Culture

In many ways, Jersey with just over 100,000 residents, punches above its weight in sports, certainly compared to similar communities in the UK. We have over the years produced many sporting greats including the recent England netball captain, Serena Guthrie.

As a major global finance centre, we also have an extremely good reputation internationally and this undoubtedly contributed to attracting the Super League Triathlon organisers, who had the confidence to stage the first round of the each series in Jersey, involving the best triathletes in the world, racing in St. Helier. The financial benefits to the Island from those visiting to both compete and watch the event can be calculated, but we must not underestimate the value to our young athletes of seeing their role models up close, perhaps meeting them and watching them compete. Triathlon has put Jersey on the international stage and shown the world what the Island can offer both as an event and as a sports tourism destination.

We have also seen both the Jersey Marathon and the Jersey Triathlon grow year on year over the past decade, attracting increasing numbers of athletes looking to compete in good quality, well run events often with their family or friends with them. As part of their visit, they will often want to experience more of Jersey life than just the sports, such as our culture and heritage, the incredible natural environment we are fortunate to live in or to simply enjoy the good food and hospitality found locally. Our offering has also attracted a growing number of competitors to take part in motor events such as the Jersey Rally and local hill climbs as well as other sports such as hockey, shooting, bowls, petanque and many others. Yet, I believe we can still do more to support and encourage our local sporting community to stage events throughout the year and especially in the ‘shoulder’
