Letter from the Publisher

The beginning of a new decade is always an opportunity to review the past and predict the future. For the past 15 years we have also used this year - 2020 - in the title of our magazine to suggest a clear vision of the future. But we are only human, and even our government (or most other governments) struggle to know enough about the future to plan for it effectively. Who could predict Brexit, Donald Trump or that the Australian bush fires would have such an impact on us at the beginning of this decade?

Looking back over previous editions of 20/20, we have nevertheless managed to identify some of the most important issues impacting on this fascinating island.

Our writers have often concentrated on the problems facing this community, as though Island life was full of problems. But there doesn’t seem to be much point in ignoring them, and hopefully, this magazine deals with problems positively as mere challenges that have to be overcome. So far the Island has had great success with a similar strategy, although there are plenty more challenges to be met and defeated.

This edition of 20/20 looks at some of the most difficult issues, which now range from coping with mental illness to trying to get out of the economic doldrums. There are solutions, and we hope we give them prominence too.

So, we can still look forward to the future with some confidence and we hope that you enjoy this edition of 20/20 magazine.
