With my experience of mental health issues, I try to keep an eye out for my employees, looking for signs of them feeling low. However, no matter what your personal experience is, you won’t be able to help everyone; people need the power to help themselves. They need the opportunity I had to speak to a professional who can give them the treatment they need. Without professional help and guidance these issues can manifest themselves in your business and lead to poor productivity and attendance. Other members of your team may also be aware of their colleague’s struggle which can then affect the morale of a whole team.


Tackling the issue head on, ensuring people have access to professional and confidential help and guidance is imperative. A mental health policy in the workplace which offers prompt access to professional treatment is becoming more common; opening dialogue around mental health encourages employees to seek treatment themselves. Mental health issues are slowly becoming less taboo, but we have a long way to go. Bupa recently conducted a study with Michael Page and found that ‘One fifth of UK workers fear they would be


ostracised for revealing a mental health problem’. This preconception is often wrong but as a nation, we need to remedy this. Celebrities, politicians and royals are shining much needed light on the issue and there has been a change in people’s attitudes towards tackling mental health and wellbeing.


Health insurers now offer policies for businesses that give employees round-the-clock access to confidential mental health telephone helplines, where they can be referred to see someone quickly and easily. They also cover the costs of different types of treatment and skip the usual waiting


times. If an employee can seek help at a time that suits their schedule, they are empowered to improve their situation. As an employer, I believe it to be my responsibility to improve the mental wellbeing of my workforce. If a member of your team is suffering with an undiagnosed mental health issue, you could be making their condition worse by applying pressure and using disciplinary action for absence.
