IMPORTANCE OF MENTAL HEALTH AT WORK

Mental health is about our own wellbeing and the way we think and feel about our daily lives. It determines how we cope in certain situations and it is influenced by a range of factors, including work and home life.


Apart from its impact on how we feel and how that affects our family and friends, it is also of significant importance to businesses, the economy and government. Perhaps that has contributed to the new enthusiasm to improve mental health screening and care.


In Jersey we are all very well aware of the ageing population. It is one of our most difficult challenges as a lower proportion of economically- active people will have to support a growing number of people not working because they are too young, too old or too ill. This demographic time-bomb will become even more threatening if


the increasing proportion of the elderly also results in an increased incidence of poor mental health as it is likely to. It is an important subject that needs tackling at every level.


In my experience of running a home care health agency, I am particularly aware of mental health problems amongst the elderly. Some are of tragic proportions and require a huge amount of support, while other mental health issues are less debilitating particularly where the right amount of care is available to them.
