MENTAL HEALTH IN THE WORKPLACE

Mental Health conditions are now one of the main causes of long-term absence from work.


The associated costs in England have been estimated at over £105 billion per year. With one in four people experiencing a mental health problem each year in the UK, the need for access to prompt professional treatment has never been greater. The average person spends a third of their lifetime in the workplace, so addressing these issues is imperative to running a successful business. Studies have consistently shown that poor mental health can lead to poor physical health and can exacerbate chronic conditions, increasing sick leave with employers resorting to disciplinary action. I believe opening the discussion around these issues is the key to solving them.

As someone who once suffered with anxiety, I have experienced first-hand the difficulties faced in the workplace whilst dealing with your issues alone. Simple tasks can become complicated and your resilience and confidence is at an all-time low. You can often feel trapped with spiralling thoughts that block out the world and potential help around you. I started attending Cognitive Behavioural Therapy sessions, which helped me to maintain a more positive outlook, allowing me to go on to form my own business ‘Baker Hudson Health’. I now employ a small team of fantastic people, all of whom I want to support and nurture to be as productive and happy as possible.
