months. This would further increase our visitor numbers and year-round visitors supporting the long-term goals of Visit Jersey.

The success of the Jersey Reds in recent years has led to the club competing in the second tier of English rugby. In addition, the recent development of the Jersey Bulls football club has shown that Jersey’s sportsmen and women are ready and willing to compete on a national stage and this has attracted both local and visiting spectators.

However, both clubs need to be sustainable in the long term if we are to build on their attraction to visiting teams and spectators. To do this, the unique profile of Jersey Reds as our only professional club, could and should be used as a springboard to put not only rugby but also representative football in Jersey onto a long term sustainable and

viable footing. This will have benefits not only to the sports in question, but undoubtedly to the whole economy through increased visitor numbers and spend as we have seen with the Jersey Reds.

Clearly, many other sports have played their part in building up our year round sporting calendar and attracting teams, individuals, family and supporters. Importantly, this also gives local teams and athletes the opportunity to compete against both unfamiliar and high calibre opposition which is vital when preparing for international and national events such as the Commonwealth Games and Island Games. As much as I am proud of all the work that local sports clubs and associations do, much of it is on a voluntary basis, and we could be doing much more to support them to grow and nurture the sports tourism sector in Jersey.

My own memories are still vivid of the last NatWest Island Games hosted in Jersey in 2015, which proved to be such a huge success for the island and gave us all that ‘feel good factor‘. Nearly 3000 visiting athletes, coaches and supporters descended on Jersey and provided our local community with a wonderful sporting spectacle. The Island did the event proud, with the community involved in so many different ways throughout the scorching hot week. It really showcased the capability that Jersey has in putting on major sporting events.

The event was praised by visiting athletes for the quality of both the organisation and the sporting venues including Springfield, FB Fields and Crabbé shooting range. But Jersey only actually invested £3 million into its sports infrastructure to support the 2015 Island Games. This compares to the £80 million that Gibraltar committed to improving their sporting facilities to stage

• • • • • • • • • • •

As a beginner you will learn the correct way, building a solid foundation for the future Also when you start, having lessons gives you a purpose when practicing at the range Learning the right way will prevent injury

Most importantly a good learning process will make you have fun quicker! The cliché that golf pros destroy golf swings or make it difficult is completely wrong A good golf lesson will simplify your swing, by making it more efficient and relevant A good lesson will make you understand important principles and gives you goals A good lesson should also teach you aspects of playing on the course As a junior having regular lessons teaches you concentration and self-control As a junior in a group, regular lessons will build a good social environment Injured or restricted, a good lesson will make you find a way to swing a different way
