April 2022 A supplement to builders merchants journal 9
And this table confirms it: more than two-thirds of the merchant companies listed (39 out of 54) saw an improvement in gross margin in their latest accounts year; in fact one-fifth (11 out of 54) reported double-digit growth rates. This time last year, only 26 out of 52 reported gross margin growth, and only two out 52 achieved double digits.
OPERATING MARGIN
This is one of those tables you want to share with your shareholders and your bank manager. It shows that despite the pandemic, despite the lockdowns, despite the lurches in demand, despite the supply difficulties and price fluctuations, the unpredictable product availability and all the rest of it; 48 out of 54 of the UK’s top builders merchants remained profitable at operating level. To put it another way, 89% of the main players in this market remained profitable during the most disruptive trading period anyone can remember.
