PEOPLE 10 MINUTES WITH: CRAIG WILLIAMSON Director Commercial Cement at CEMEX UK
What is your current role and how long have you been doing it?
For the past 3 years I have held the role of Director Commercial Cement at CEMEX UK
What does your role entail?
In a nutshell, I am responsible for the UK sales and commercial activities for both bulk and bagged cement. From our network of plants and terminals CEMEX distributes cement to all customer segments including Builder Merchants, Concrete & Pre-cast Producers and Infrastructure projects. Dealing with the impact of the COVID pandemic and a quicker than anticipated recovery, there hasn’t been a dull day.
How did you get started in this industry? Started in the industry as a trainee with an independent materials business in Sheffield. 35 years later I still consider myself a ‘trainee’ and continue to learn every day
What roles were you doing before and how did they prepare you for this one? I have been fortunate to be exposed to many different roles within CEMEX. In the early years of my career, I trained as an Accountant and Finance Director before moving to commercial and general management roles. Regional roles in Concrete and a spell as National Supply Chain & Logistics Director have provided an excellent grounding in the importance of the customer and the need to
Aqualisa has appointed Mat Norris as chief executive officer. As part of a planned succession, Norris will replace Colin Sykes, who has held the position since 2018. Sykes will remain as a

exceed customer service expectations.
What would you like to achieve in your role?
We all have a huge obligation to reduce our impact on the environment. So, if I had to pick out one objective it would be to have a positive impact in achieving CEMEX’s strategic climate ambitions, through our Future In Action programmes. More generally I’d like to look back, at the right time, and see that I had made a positive impact on the teams, stakeholder groups and customers served.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Rather than specific goals or achievements I’d say the highlights have come from the dedicated people and teams I have been fortunate to work with.
What do you see as the main issues for builders merchants and for the construction industry at the moment? We are committed to Net Zero CO2
If you could go back to the start of your career, what piece of advice would you give yourself?
You spend the majority of your life at work, so you’d better like what you do and have fun. Be open to learning, explore different opportunities and recognise that the best results come from teamwork.
What keeps you busy at the weekends? A wife, two teenage children and a dog plus the occasional round of golf.
If you’re at the bar – what are you drinking?
Probably too much premium lager and the occasional G&T.
What’s your favourite book? Favourite film?

but collaboration is critical. Everyone in the Construction Industry and associated supply chains have a moral obligation to reduce the environmental impact of our activities. Whether it’s in the areas of waste reduction, product recycling, low carbon materials or elsewhere, all stakeholders need to collaborate and have aligned goals.

I’m a big fan of Quentin Tarantino movies and would pick out Pulp Fiction as my favourite. A book I recently read was ‘Putin’s People’ by Catherine Belton which provides an insight into how Putin has for decades been on a journey, the tragic results of which we are seeing unfold in Ukraine.
If you could be a superhero, what super- power would you choose? The power to rejuvenate, as my mind still thinks I’m 18 years old! BMJ
