TRAILBLAZERS A word from the editor...
WHAT A DIFFERENCE two years can make. The pandemic hit the industry just as the 2020 edition of Trailblazers was going to press. When the merchant doors closed as a result, no-one was entirely sure when they would open again. But open they did, thanks, in part to the hard work of the BMF and the Construction Leadership Council. In the intervening two years we’ve seen the industry pull its proverbial big pants up and get on with the job. A job that hasn’t always been that easy as, since then we’ve also had two years of unprecedented ups and downs: product shortages, labour shortages, fuel shortages, energy price escalations, and now, a war in Ukraine. The effects of all this is evident in these pages. The last year in particular has seen a spate of take-overs not seen since the heady days of national merchant acquisitive growth in the late 1990s. Only this time, it’s not national plc money that’s buying up merchants, but private equity. The good thing is that there are clearly people out there who view the merchant market as having plenty of potential and as a good place to invest. On the other hand, it does make compiling a benchmarking publication such as this incredibly difficult. That not withstanding, this publication shows that there is plenty of life and potential still in this market; independents, multiples and national chains are thriving in a variety of guises. As always, the caveat with these pages is that BMJ can only publish what it has access to, and, in the case of accounts filed at Companies House, what is in the public domain. Some of the most recent results were filed after the financial tables were compiled, and different companies sometimes have different year-ends to others.
