BMF launches Ukraine Appeal to unite support from merchant industry
The BMF is calling on its members and their customers to help raise vital funds to support those affected by the war in Ukraine. The trade body has created a dedicated appeal page at www.

Changes to Building Regs: June 2022
Last month we alerted readers to new Approved Documents from the Department for Levelling Up, Homes and Communities for Part L (Conservation of Fuel & Power), Part F (Ventilation) and Part O (Overheating) of the Building Regulations in England. Following industry
consultations, ministers have decided on stricter regulations for new homes that mean builders have to achieve a 31% improvement in carbon emissions against the old 2013 Regs. These changes apply from 15 June this year. The new Part L covers new residential and non-residential buildings - and extensions & refurbishments to existing properties. An industry- wide alliance of housebuilders, contractors and other property professionals called the Future Homes Hub has been established to galvanise action and good practice to meet climate and environmental targets.
on importing all Russian building materials until the war in Ukraine comes to an end.
Funds raised through the appeal in the UK will go to DEC, the Disasters Emergency Committee, which works with the UK’s 15 leading aid charities to provide and deliver aid. John Newcomb said: “We have received pictures from our UFEMAT colleague in Ukraine showing the devastation affecting homes and factories, and the brutal cost of war on ordinary people. His own daughters are amongst the millions who have been forced to flee the
country to safety. “In addition to emergency aid, he told us that warm clothing, such as thermal and insulated workwear, is also urgently required.
“Our members play a key role in the community and the unique nature of their work, and their stock of equipment such as workwear, puts them in a good position to help get much needed supplies over to Ukraine and we will be working with them to orchestrate a national response and get supplies to those who need them as quickly as possible.” “In the meantime, our focus is on raising funds through our
Oxford Zero Emission Zone begins
Oxfordshire County Council and Oxford City Council are running a Zero Emission Zone pilot scheme in a small area of the city centre that began at the start of March. It is Britain’s first Zero Emission Zone and relates to only 9 streets. Restrictions apply 7 days per week between 7am and 7pm. Daily charges are: • zero-emission vehicles: free. • ultra-low emission vehicles: £2. • low emission vehicles that are Euro 4 petrol or Euro 6 diesel: £4. • all other vehicles: £10. This ZEZ is a pilot and the results will inform decisions on whether (or not) it is expanded more widely to cover the whole of Oxford. That could be next year but another consultation is necessary before that. Further details, including how to pay, and some limited discounts & exemptions, are here. https://

After talks between Whitehall, Mayor Andy Burnham and the 10 local authorities, ministers have revoked the legal direction that compelled Greater Manchester to charge £60 per day for non- compliant HGVs. This CAZ could be reintroduced in future but not in May this year.
