Look on the next page, page 23. Your Student Handbook gives several examples of behaviors that you can handle yourself. Can you give me one?
[Call on a student or ask for volunteers. Discuss the example the student has given and why the student is capable of handling the situation.]
Keep in mind that minor problems are more common than any other category. These are the situations you will most often need to deal with. Using your Behavior Management Tips will help you manage these situations on your own. What are the six Behavior Management Tips? (Provide Comfort, Distract, Give Choices, Make a Game, When…Then, Take a Break/Start Over.)
I’m going to read another story. Listen carefully so that you can decide what to do in this situation:
You’re babysitting for 4-year-old Katie. When it’s bedtime you tell Katie it’s time to put away her toys so she can get ready for bed. She has been having fun playing with her princess dolls. She tells you that she can’t go to bed because the princess is going to a ball at the castle.
• Who should handle this situation? (Handle yourself.)
• Why is it most appropriate to handle this situation yourself? (The problem is not serious or urgent.)
• Remember to use your Safe Sitter® Behavior Aid Chart - it gives you
guidance about what to do. What does your Behavior Aid Chart tell you? [See Preschoolers, Breaking Rules or Not Listening.]
• Which Behavior Management Tip could you use to help you handle this situation? (When/Then, Make a Game, Give Choices.)
• Finally, how could you have prevented this situation? (Remember to give preschoolers a 5-minute warning before bedtime.)
[Graphic: Ages and Stages] Let’s practice using your Safe Sitter®
Behavior Aid Chart to answer some questions: Who should handle the following situations?
1. Toddler crying when employer leaves (Handle minor problem yourself.) [Have student read info on Behavior Aid Chart for Toddler Crying When Employer Leaves.]
2. Preschooler crying due to fear of thunder (Handle minor problem yourself.) [Have student read info on Behavior Aid Chart for Preschooler Afraid of Things.]
3. School-age siblings you can’t get to stop fighting (Ask back-up adult to come help.)
4. School-age child threatening to hurt self or others (Call 9-1-1 if child has a weapon which could cause harm or if child is in physical danger.)
