As the child entertainer, you will act like you are assisting your friend at a job for a new employer.

• You will meet and greet the employer and toddler/preschooler guest.

• You will entertain the child while the employer is answering questions.

• You will present the gift to the child. • It’s a good idea to prepare by reviewing the Safe Sitter®

Development (page 13) and the Safe Sitter® (page 14).

Guide to Child Guide to Child Care Duties

Note to Instructor

If there are two Instructors available, the second Instructor should serve as a coach for child entertainer throughout this experience.

When you meet an employer, it’s important to make them feel comfortable and confident with you as the babysitter.

• What questions will our student volunteer need to ask the employer when they meet?

• Our guest is ________ years old. What age group is that? • What entertainment ideas are good for that age group? • What ideas for comfort could be used for that age group?

• [If the class has a gift for the child] Is our gift appropriate for the child’s age? Why?

• What safety issues must be considered? • Let’s look at the Safe Sitter®

Guide to Child Development (on page 13):

– Can the child walk? – Can the child talk? – Can the child be counted on to stay safe? – Can the child be counted on to follow the rules when left alone? – Can the child feed himself/herself? – Can the child go to the bathroom alone? – Can the child go to bed alone?

ROLE-PLAY Going to a babysitting job with a new employer.

[Invite the employer and child into the room. Introduce them to the class and explain what the employer interviewer and child entertainer will do. Ask the employer to give the information that they would normally give a new babysitter.]
