• If you are being picked up by the employer at 5 pm, what time should you be ready? (4:50 pm.)

If you are babysitting, you need to gather some important information in advance, such as:

• Important contact information for the employer, including their cell phone number, an alternate number to reach the employer, the employer’s address, and contact information for a back-up adult.

• Information about the children, including their names and ages. • Information about the BEST routines for each child. • Allergies you need to be aware of. • Other tips such as ideas for comfort and behavior tips.

Also, make sure the employer takes you on a tour of the house. Ask them about:

• Their fire escape plan. • Rooms that are off-limits for you or the children. • Food in the refrigerator or pantry that is off-limits. • House rules and responsibilities like pets.

Remember: You’ll need 30 minutes with a new employer and 10 minutes with a repeat employer to go over all the information you’ll need. [Refer students back to the Safe Sitter®

Important Information Note

Pad and tell them they can use it to take notes on all of this important information.]

Sometimes, you’ll have to cancel a job. What are some reasons to cancel a job? (If you get sick or have a family emergency.)

GAME: CANCELLATION GAME

• Select a student and explain that student has accepted a babysitting job. • Place cancellation spinner on a flat surface such as a tabletop and ask student to spin it. Ask student if reason on spinner is an appropriate reason to cancel. Discuss why/why not.

• Repeat with the next student. • Keep repeating as time allows (try to discuss all six reasons).

How should you cancel a job? (Speak to the employer by phone or in person, as soon as possible.)

[Note: Emphasize to students that they shouldn’t text. They owe it to the employer to speak to them and let them know why they have to cancel.]

If you cannot reach them by phone, it is okay to leave a voice message. SAFE SITTER® INSTRUCTOR MANUAL | PAGE 69
