Let’s practice saying the Safety Signal. [Have students recite “I’m ready to be picked up now” together.] Would you use the Safety Signal if…

• Someone you are with scares you or gives you an uncomfortable feeling? (Yes.)

• Someone has offered to give you a ride home, but you suspect they have been drinking because they are slurring their speech or walking unsteady? (Yes.)

• Someone is talking to you or touching you in a way that makes you uncomfortable? (Yes.)

Turn to Page 6 of your Student Handbook. Our first safety rule was “Always practice safe habits.” Page 6 gives you a lot of guidance about how you can stay safe both indoors and outdoors when you are home alone or babysitting. For example, you should always keep doors and windows locked, and you shouldn’t answer the door unless you are expecting a visitor. What would you do if you were home alone after school and someone knocked at the door?

[Emphasize that they should not answer the door unless it is someone they are expecting, they have checked a peephole or door viewer before opening the door to make sure it is the person they are expecting, and they have their parent’s permission.]

What about if you are online? Are there things you should do to stay safe when you are online? (Yes.) Just like there are safety hazards indoors and outdoors, there are also safety hazards online, including people that seem friendly, but could be dangerous.

Should you protect your privacy when you are online? (Yes.) When you post something online, other people have access to information about you, so it’s important to be very careful about what you post.

Did you ever do something as a child that you’re now embarrassed about?

[Most students have an embarrassing memory, but do not ask them to share it.]

If someone took a photo or video of you doing that, would you want your friends, neighbors, or teachers to see it? (No.) Remember that when you share something online, anyone can screenshot or download your comment/photo/video, share it with other people – in person or online, or upload it to another website/app/social media site AT ANY TIME, EVEN YEARS LATER.

Keep yourself safe, protect your privacy, and save your future self from embarrassment or danger by following the online safety habits in your Student Handbook on page 7.
