CHOKING INFANT ROLE-PLAY AND SKILLS PRACTICE


[Have students practice on infant manikin. Read each scenario to the group and have them practice the steps as you call out each step. Make sure each scenario has a successful outcome, and at the end, ask each student how they could have prevented the situation.]


Scenario #1


• 11-month-old Hannah pulls herself up to a table, finds a plastic pen cap, and puts it in her mouth. Hannah coughs. You are alone.


Scenario #2


• 10-month-old Jordan finds his older sister’s lip balm on the floor. Jordan puts it in his mouth and coughs. His 9-year-old sister Kiara is there.


Scenario #3


• 11-month-old Hailey finds a metal bolt on the basement floor. She puts it in her mouth and coughs. You are alone.


Scenario #4


• 8-month-old Anthony is crawling around the living room and finds his older sister’s eraser and puts it in his mouth. Anthony starts coughing. His 10-year-old sister Zoe is there.


Scenario #5


• 10-month-old Diego finds a button battery from his grandfather’s hearing aid on the floor. He puts the battery in his mouth and coughs. You are alone.


Scenario #6


• 9-month-old Matthew is rolling a ball in the yard. He picks up a small rock and puts it in his mouth and coughs. You are alone.


Scenario #7


• 10-month-old Sydney is given a caramel by her older sister. Sydney coughs. Her 8-year-old sister Taylor is there.


Scenario #8


• 11-month-old Lucas finds a piece of apple that has dropped on the floor. He puts it in his mouth and coughs. You are alone.
