CHALLENGE #5 – POISON

This is now your second babysitting job for Mrs. Miller. After she leaves, you get into your backpack for some gum. James wants to look in your backpack. You go to use the bathroom. When you get back, you find James eating the last of the five Tylenol® your backpack.

• Choose another student to answer the following questions: – What is the problem? (Poisoning.)

– What is the first aid? [Have student read entire Poisoning section of the Safe Sitter® First Aid Chart on page 35. Stress to follow First Aid Chart exactly.]

– How can you provide comfort? (Pooh Bear, blanket, cuddling.)

– How could you have prevented it from happening? (Don’t ever leave a toddler alone. Don’t carry things in your purse, backpack, or pockets that could harm a young child.)

Note to Instructor

Students often ask what to do when they have to go to the bathroom during a babysitting job. Infants, toddlers, and preschoolers must not be left unsupervised. If the sitter is babysitting an infant, the infant can be placed safely in the crib while they are in the bathroom. If they are babysitting toddlers, they can take the toddler with them (bring a safe toy that the toddler can play with). If they are watching preschoolers, they should leave the door open where they can continue to supervise the preschoolers.

• Choose another student to role-play making the call to Poison Control Center (800-222-1222) while the back-up adult is on the way. Remind student to write down everything the Poison Center tells them so they can show it to the back-up adult. Explain that there is no script for calling the Poison Center, but they should begin by giving the alert, “I am babysitting. This is an emergency.”

• Instructor pretends to be the Poison Center and asks the following questions:

– What happened? – When did it happen? – Is the child having any symptoms? – How old is the child? – What is the name of the product? – How much is missing?

– What are the active ingredients in the product (listed on the label)?
