True or False: Injuries happen when:
[Read each statement separately and ask students to call out their answer. After they have called out their answer, let them know the statement is True.]
• Children are too young to understand the risk or danger. • Children are showing off. • The sitter is not watching the children. • A younger child is imitating older children.
These are all true! Injuries can happen anytime that the sitter or the child is not paying attention, or the sitter or child doesn’t understand the risk or danger.
Injuries can occur ANYWHERE, but there are some places where injuries are more common.
Can you think of some rooms indoors where injuries are more common? [Let students guess. There are no wrong answers, as injuries can occur in any room.]
Most injuries occur in kitchens and bathrooms, but injuries can occur ANYWHERE, including:
• Any place where there are hard surfaces or sharp edges, like a fireplace or a tile floor, or even the corner of a coffee table.
• Where there are dangerous things available and within the child’s reach, or places that haven’t been childproofed. [Stairs, outlets, etc.]
Why do most injuries occur in kitchens or bathrooms? (There are safety hazards in kitchens and bathrooms.)
[Ask students to name some safety hazards – they may remember some hazards from their discussion during Safety Skills. They may name such things as knives, stoves, sinks, medicine cabinets, cleaning supplies, etc.]
MATCHING ACTIVITY
Your Student Handbook lists some common safety hazards for each age group on pages 28-29. Use this information to do the activity in your Handbook on page 30.
[Give students up to a minute to complete the activity.] [Graphic: Ages and Stages] Let’s review your answers together. What age is likely to… Roll off of a changing table or sofa? (Infant.)
[Point out that infants learn to roll over at 4-6 months old and they should never take their hand off of an infant that is on a changing table. The safest place to change an infant’s diaper is on the floor.]
Ride their bike into the street without looking? (School age.) PAGE 26 | SAFE SITTER® INSTRUCTOR MANUAL
