• Have students line up in the order they think the ER would see the patients.


• Have class determine if the order is correct. If not, put in correct order. (Answer key: Correct order is 1—loss of consciousness, 2—wheezing, 3—dog bite, 4—limping, 5—skinned knee.)


• Explain that the child making the most noise would probably be the child with the skinned knee and the quietest child would be the unconscious one. Should that influence who is seen first? (No. Patients should be seen in order of seriousness and urgency. Loss of consciousness is the most serious problem and requires immediate attention because an unconscious person may suddenly stop breathing and die.)

[Have students sit in a circle on the floor. Arrange the injury cards in the middle of the circle with the injury side down. Explain that each age group is associated with certain problems. For example, an infant may have a diaper rash, but won’t have a trampoline injury.]
