• Emphasize that poison can be deadly even if there are no symptoms. You have to call for help even though it means letting other people know that you didn’t watch James as carefully as you should have. Waiting to see if he develops symptoms may mean YOU HAVE WAITED TOO LONG!

Note to Instructor Five Tylenol®

pills may be a lethal dose for a toddler. However, it

is highly unlikely that the sitter would be aware of the extreme danger because the child would not have immediate symptoms. Remind the class to seek help anytime they suspect that a child has ingested something that may be poisonous to them.

CHALLENGE #6 – HEAD INJURY

You are babysitting James again. James is playing at the top of his slide in the back yard. A friendly dog comes into the yard and James gets so excited he forgets to watch where he is going and falls backward, hitting his head. He does not move after he falls and although he is breathing, he does not answer your questions.

• Choose another student to answer the following questions: – What is the problem? (Head Injury.)

– What is the first aid? [Have student read entire Head Injury section of the Safe Sitter® First Aid Chart on page 35. Stress to follow First Aid Chart exactly.]

– How can you provide comfort? (Talk calmly and reassuringly to child.)

– How could you have prevented it from happening? (Watch small children carefully on outdoor play equipment.)

• Choose another student to practice call to 9-1-1. • Student says, “I am babysitting. This is an emergency.” • Instructor pretends to be 9-1-1: – 9-1-1, where is your emergency? – What is your emergency? / What happened? – What is your name? – Is there anybody else with you? – Can you see the child? Is he breathing?

– I’ve sent for help and it’s on the way. I’m going to stay on the phone with you until they arrive.
