[Point out the sidebar on page 48.] Why is it important to share the job information with your parent? [So your parent will know where you are and can make sure you are safe.]
Remember: never go anywhere without letting someone know where you’re going and when you’ll return. Your parent is responsible for keeping you safe, and they need this information in order to do that.

• Who: Who will you be with or who are you working for? • What: What are you doing? Babysitting job or something else? • Where: Where will you be? Share the specific address!
• When: When is the date and time for the job? What time are you leaving? What time will you be home?
• How: How are you getting there? How are you getting home?
Sometimes, you’ll have to refuse a job. What are some reasons to refuse a job?
[If you are not available, if you will not be safe, if the job is more than you can handle, or if you don’t have permission are just some of the reasons that a babysitter may want to refuse a job, but there are other reasons as well. Perhaps the sitter is uncomfortable in the employer’s house because there are guns present, or perhaps the sitter doesn’t enjoy babysitting for that family because the children are difficult. Point out the suggested ways to refuse a job on page 49. Remind students to promptly call, not text, unless the employer has asked the student to let them know via text.]
It’s okay to refuse a job, but it can be hard to tell someone that you are refusing the job, so let’s practice together by saying, “I’m sorry, but I’m not available.”
[Have students practice saying, “I’m sorry, but I’m not available.”]
In addition to being prepared, you must also BE RESPONSIBLE if you want to be successful.
• What does it mean to be responsible? (To follow through on your promises. To be punctual. To dress appropriately. To follow the rules. To do the job as promised.)
• Why is it important to be on time for a babysitting job? (The employer may have plans that they can’t be late for, such as a dinner reservation or a movie.)
