I’m going to read a story. Listen carefully so that you can decide what to do in this situation: You are babysitting for a 6-year-old boy named William. It’s a warm, sunny spring day and you take him outside to play on the swing set. William decides to stand up on the swing but then he falls backward and hits his head on the ground. You run to him. He is lying on the ground, not moving. He doesn’t answer when you call his name.


• Who should handle this injury? (Call 9-1-1.)


• Why is Call-9-1-1 the appropriate thing to do? (William’s injuries – loss of consciousness – are a THREAT TO LIFE.)


• What does THREAT TO LIFE mean? (Unless immediate and appropriate action is taken, the child may die!)


• When you have a THREAT TO LIFE, it’s important to stay calm, stay safe, and provide comfort. How can you calm yourself down? (Take several deep breaths. Focus on what to do. Use a calm voice.)


• Why is it important to call right away for expert help with a THREAT TO LIFE? (An early call for expert help can save a child’s life.)


• Finally, how could you have prevented William from falling off the swing? (Watch him closely and don’t allow him to stand up on a swing.)


ROLE-PLAY Let’s do a role-play so that you can practice calling 9-1-1.


[Choose a student volunteer and ask them to be the babysitter in the case of William that you’ve just discussed. Have the student follow the directions in the sidebar on page 31 of their Handbook and answer the questions that the Instructor asks below. The student can pretend they are babysitting at their home and answer the questions using their home address and phone number.]


• 9-1-1, where is your emergency? • What is your emergency?/What happened? • What is your name? • What phone number are you calling from? Is that a cell phone? • Help is on the way!
