Finally, no matter where you are, you can keep yourself safe by following good personal safety habits. These habits include always having access to a phone so that you can get help if you need it. It’s also important to stay away from people that have been abusing alcohol or drugs, or anyone else that makes you uncomfortable. Trust your gut feeling. If you are scared of someone, or they make you uncomfortable, stay away from that person. Use the Safety Signal to contact a parent or other safe adult to come get you if you need help to get away from that person.
What is the Safety Signal? (I’m ready to be picked up now.)
Fall down stairs that are not protected by a safety gate? (Toddlers.) Chew on medication thinking it is candy? (Preschoolers.)
VIDEO: POISONING VIDEO: SAFETY FOR THE SITTER
Poisoning is a danger for three of the four age groups. Let’s watch this Babysitter Boss video to learn more about poisoning.
Do any of you have an allergy or know someone who is allergic to something? Allergies are very common, and it’s important to be aware of the allergies of those around you, including friends, neighbors, and children you are babysitting. Why would you want to be aware that a friend, neighbor, or child you babysit has an allergy?
Now that you know the three safety rules and we’ve reviewed some important safety habits, let’s play a game.
GAME: WHAT DO I DO?
[So that you can help them avoid the allergen, and therefore prevent an allergic reaction.]
What does an allergic reaction look like?
[It could look very different, depending on the severity of the allergy: runny nose and itchy eyes, wheezing, hives, difficulty breathing, even loss of consciousness or shock.]
• Ask the students to review the unsafe situation on each danger card and discuss as a group what to do. Encourage them to use their Student Handbook (pages 6-9) as a reference. Give students several minutes to discuss.

• When the students are ready, call on a student or ask for a volunteer to read each card and explain what their group decided to do in that situation.
One of the most important things that you will learn today is the system that Safe Sitters use to assess an injury/illness to determine who should handle it. Safe Sitters decide who should handle any injury or health problem based on the seriousness and urgency of the problem.
Good job, everyone! Now let’s review:
What does “serious” mean? (The situation is more than the sitter can handle; outside help is needed.)
• What is the Safety Signal you should use if you are in an unsafe situation? (I’m ready to be picked up now.)
What does “urgent” mean? (Help is needed right away.)
• Why should you be careful about what you post online? (Because nothing you share online is ever truly private.)
• What are the three rules that will help you stay safe? (1. Practice safe habits, 2. When you leave home, let your parent know the High Five info: Who, What, Where, When, and How; 3. Use the Safety Signal if you are in an unsafe situation.)
• Split the class into groups of 2 - 4 students each, depending on the size of your class.
• Pass out the danger cards to each group (keep distributing them until all cards are gone).
Let’s watch this Babysitter Boss video to see how to handle three common emergencies you might face when home alone or babysitting.
Sometimes, things happen even when you are using safe habits. Pages 8 and 9 of your Student Handbook give you guidance about what to do in some of these situations.
