CHOKING CHILD ROLE-PLAY AND SKILLS PRACTICE


[Have students practice on child manikin. Read each scenario to the group and have them practice the steps as you call out each step. Make sure each scenario has a successful outcome, and at the end, ask each student how they could have prevented the situation.]


Scenario #1


• 18-month-old Gabrielle finds a dime and puts it in her mouth and coughs. You are alone.


Scenario #2


• 16-month-old Brianna finds a piece of popcorn behind the sofa and puts it in her mouth and coughs. You are alone.


Scenario #3


• 2-year-old Kayla is eating a piece of your candy bar. She takes a bite and her brother chases her to take the rest away. Kayla coughs. Her 8-year- old brother David is there.


Scenario #4


• 3-year-old Jack starts coughing while eating raw carrot pieces. You are alone.


Scenario #5


• 2-year-old Ethan is eating a piece of butterscotch hard candy. He coughs. You are alone.


Scenario #6


• 18-month-old Noah is playing with his brother’s small cars and coughs. You notice the wheel of the car is missing. His 9-year-old brother Jacob is there.


Scenario #7


• 3-year-old Mia is eating a cookie given to her by her older sister. Mia coughs. Her 8-year-old sister Abby is there.


Scenario #8


• 4-year-old Nick is eating cheese that has been cut into 1-inch cubes. Nick coughs. You are alone.
