Child CPR Checklist 1 YEAR OR OLDER
1. Tap the child’s shoulder and call out the child’s name. Check to see if the child responds—moves, speaks, blinks, or reacts to you.
2. If child doesn’t respond, ask anyone who can to call 9-1-1 for help. If you are alone, do not delay rescue attempts to make the call.
3. If the child is lying face-down, roll the child over to his back while carefully supporting the head and neck. Make sure the child is lying on a firm, flat surface.
4. Check breathing. Look from head to belly to see if child is not breathing or only gasping. If not breathing or only gasping, give CPR.
5. Do 30 chest compressions. Quickly remove or arrange clothes so that you can see the child’s chest. Be sure the child’s clothing doesn’t cover his face. Place heel of one hand on the center of the child’s chest between the nipples. Place the heel of your other hand on top of the first hand. Push straight down on the child’s breastbone keeping your arms straight. Compress about 2 inches. Count out loud while you push hard and fast. You should push at a rate of 100–120 pushes per minute. After each push, release pressure on the chest so the chest can return to its normal position.
6. If you know or suspect the child may have choked, open the child’s mouth widely and look for an object, such as food or toy. If you see an object, carefully remove it with your fingers.
7. Open the airway by gently tilting the head back and lifting the chin up. Put one hand on the forehead and two fingers of your other hand on the child’s jawbone.
8. Give 2 rescue breaths. While holding airway open, pinch the child’s nose closed. Cover the child’s mouth with your mouth and create an airtight seal. Blow gently for about one second for each breath. Watch for the chest to rise as you give each breath. If the child’s chest did not rise after the first breath, reposition the head using the head-tilt/chin-lift and attempt to give another breath. Proceed to chest compressions after 2 breaths even if breaths failed to cause the chest to rise.
9. Do 30 chest compressions. Continue CPR for 2 minutes or a total of 5 sets of 30 chest compressions and 2 rescue breaths. If you know or suspect the child may have choked, check the mouth each time you open the airway to give breaths.
10. Call 9-1-1 and then continue doing CPR until 9-1-1 arrives and takes over or until the child starts to breathe and move. If the child begins to breathe but is still not responding, roll the child onto his side with head tilted slightly back. Stay with the child and wait for 9-1-1 to arrive. If the child stops breathing, roll the child to his back and resume CPR.
11. Call employer after 9-1-1 arrives.
