What should you do? Ask if there is a key to get into the bathroom when talking to Sophia’s mother.

How would you stay calm, stay safe, and provide comfort? Take a deep breath and stand outside the bathroom door. Continue to talk to Sophia. Once the door is opened, do not scold Sophia.

Is there anything you could have done to prevent this situation? It is important to watch preschoolers even if they are mostly able to do things alone. Go to the bathroom with Sophia in case she needs help and you can make sure the door does not lock.

Card #2 What is the problem? Siblings are fighting.

Who should handle the situation and why? Handle the fighting yourself. Call your back-up adult if you are unable to stop the fight. This is serious but not urgent. Call your parents if the back-up adult thinks they should come home.

What should you do? Settle the argument as fairly as possible and separate the boys. Use Take a Break/Start Over to help stop the fighting and help the brothers get back in control. Break time should be 7 minutes for each brother away from the video game.

How would you stay calm, stay safe, and provide comfort? Stay in control of yourself and focus on settling the fight. Make sure everyone is safe and speak to your brothers in a calm, soft voice.

Is there anything you could have done to prevent this situation? You could have handled the arguing before it got physical by having them take a break from the video games (Take a Break/Start Over) or giving your brothers a choice of two different activities instead of the video games (Give Choices).

Card #3 What is the problem? Broken glass.

Who should handle the situation and why? Handle yourself and block the area to prevent any injury. This is not serious and not urgent.

What should you do? Pick up pieces and put them where no one will be hurt. Keep the child safely away from the danger while you clean up. Tell the employer what happened and how you handled it once they arrive home.

How do you stay calm, stay safe, and provide comfort? Do not get upset at Hannah because accidents happen. Pick up the pieces of glass very carefully to avoid cutting yourself. Ask Hannah to stay in her chair and provide comfort by giving her a book or sing a song while you are cleaning up the broken glass.
