Ask them to confirm that they received your voice message.
Finally, you must also BE CONSIDERATE if you want to be successful. How can you show that you are considerate? (Obey any rules the employer has left for you regarding what you or the children are allowed to do. Be a good house guest—clean up after yourself and don’t get into things that don’t belong to you.)
When you are greeting an employer or other adult, it is important to be polite and respectful. That’s part of being considerate, too.
• Introduce yourself when you are meeting an employer for the first time.
• Look the employer in the eye and smile.
• Speak clearly and loud enough that you can be heard and understood without being asked to repeat yourself.
• Shake hands with the employer.
ROLE-PLAY Handshake and Introductions.
Let’s practice meeting an employer. Each of you will introduce yourself to me. Remember to speak clearly, be loud enough to be heard, look me in the eye, and use a firm handshake.
[Have each student practice introducing themselves to the Instructor.]
Finally, sometimes, things happen that you don’t expect. Safe Sitters are prepared to handle these situations. What would you do . . .
• If you become ill while at a job? (Call the employer. If necessary, have your own parent relieve you until the employer comes home.)
• If a situation makes you very uncomfortable? (Use your Safety Signal to alert your parent to pick you up. You and your parent can remain with the children until the employer comes home.)
• If you see or suspect that a child has been mistreated or neglected? [The best thing for students to do is to discuss their concerns with their parent after they get home, as this is not something they should attempt to handle on their own. Their parent can help them decide what to do. If they are concerned for the child’s safety and do not want to wait until they return home, they should call their parent immediately.]
Don’t forget to use the Safety Signal if you are in an unsafe situation. [Remind students of the Safety Signal: “I’m ready to be picked up now.”] [Graphic: Safety Signal]
