build trust between all stakeholders so that knowledge, insights and data can be shared better, which in turn will enable us to better understand and satisfy the travelling consumer. International travel is forecast to


grow by up to six per cent year-on- year going forward and if that’s not something we should be positive about, I don’t know what is. There are millions of travellers on


our doorstep every single day; we just need to get them to spend in the first place and then, more often.


Legislative challenges remain an agenda-setting topic. What’s the landscape looking like in ASPAC in particular with regards to the WHO tobacco protocol? The World Health Organization’s protocol to eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products (ITP) is an immensely important and urgent issue given the importance of tobacco to the industry in its own right, but also, as proven through research, that people who buy tobacco are more inclined to buy other things than any other category of traveller. It is a vital stimulator for brands and tobacco in itself is hugely important for the industry. The ITP issue and how we can


avoid the imposition of a legal ban on the product in duty free is something that the Duty Free World Council, of which TFWA is a founding member, and all other member associations are mobilised to address. We are all actively working with brands, retailers and airports around the world to ensure that we are speaking out now, with one voice. We are all against illicit trading,


however, our industry is not the problem and we need to get this across. An action paper has already


been produced and the Duty Free World Council, through the various member associations, is mobilising the industry as a whole. It will be a tough fight and there’s no guarantee of winning, but we believe it can be won and it’s important for us that we get to a situation where any formal decision is postponed until the track and trace system is implemented with the tobacco industry.

technology integration are trends shaping Asia’s retail scene in 2018. How is the industry embracing the next wave of retail change? Frictionless retail is coming to us whether we like it or not and I think we’ve perhaps had a tendency to be a bit too slow in adapting to the world around us. With many interesting initiatives such as Brisbane Airport’s partnership with TravelbyBit to introduce digital currency-enabled transactions, I think we are definitely catching up. However, we will have to work hard to ensure we don’t lose out and must also make sure that whatever we do, we offer convenience, excitement and value. Across ASPAC right now there


are a growing number of retailers adopting new methods of retail and payment, which go well beyond click and collect. I think landlords must work more


closely with retailers to ensure that all these initiatives are implemented, which can only be good for footfall and penetration.


Finally, what other upcoming developments in the region do you see as adding new value to the customer experience? There has been a wealth of exciting developments for our industry in the region of late, from the highly anticipated introduction of arrivals duty free in Japan and China through

to downtown duty free growth in key markets. What is particularly interesting


is that recent TFWA commissioned research showed that for the first time cruise line passengers, especially from China, are a major source of potential for the industry, and this can only continue to grow. In the past, we hardly ever talked


about the cruise line industry in Asia, but it’s now growing exponentially. For me, perhaps the most exciting development I see is the potential that lies in closer partnerships between brands,


retailers


and landlords. Improved infrastructure is


always good, but a new business mindset will have a deeper and lasting impact. «
