Tokyo Narita International Airport is in the midst of an exciting management plan to deliver new retail upgrades across its terminals, including at Terminal 1 airside as 2017 looks to be a positive year of developments for Japan. Luke Barras-Hill provides an update.

ew Year retail figures paint a positive picture for Japan’s airport operators.


According to a March update from tax-free refund specialist Global Blue, calendar year-to-date tax- free sales increased by 19%, as an increase in transactions (+27%) predominantly due to Chinese tourists heading to Japan provided a timely fillip for growth. A boost in the number of Chinese


New Year trips was a primary factor, however, the softening Japanese yen against the RMB resulted in the aforementioned transaction growth across all spending categories in the first two months of the year, Global Blue continues. It is worth pointing out that the


pique in sales and transactions is notable in the context of continuing geopolitical volatility between China and South Korea. Overall, the Asia tax free market


grew by 6% year-on-year in the first two months of 2017, but average customer spend across the region dipped by -1% year-on-year, Global Blue says.

TRBusiness, NAA is targeting JPY150bn ($1.5bn) in duty free, tax- free and restaurant sales by 2018, in line with its ‘Innovative Narita 2018’ plans that will affect important improvements in its passenger and commercial facilities. The airport has opened four new


brand boutiques in the airport’s ‘Fifth Avenue’ shopping mall, located after outbound passport control in Terminal 2. These included boutiques from


Chanel, Bottega Veneta and a Chanel fragrance & boutique store in November, and the first Prada airport boutique in Japan in December. These are all operated directly by NAA Retailing Corporation.


T1 shops to open in 2018 Moving forward, NAA’s 2016-2018 strategy, released in April last year, has earmarked the opening of new airside shops in Terminal 1, situated predominantly in the Central Building on the third floor. While specific details are at


this stage being kept confidential, an airport source tells TRBusiness that the new outlets are


set to open in 2018. The number of units, their


sizes and merchandise mix are currently being finalised, although at this stage the source was unable to provide further information. However, they directed TRBusiness


to a section of the management plan, which emphasises the need to strengthen Narita’s revenue base by linking travellers – particularly foreign visitors – to retail sales. Delegates attending this month’s


TFWA Asia Pacific Conference will be offered the chance to attend a ‘Rediscovering Japan’ workshop, in which NAA’s retail developments will be put more firmly in the spotlight. The expected workshop


line-up includes NAA Senior Vice President Hideki Hayashida; Nobuo Nabiska, President of skincare brand The Ginza; and Tadashi Shimura, President of the Japan Association of Travel Agents. To hear more about NAA’s
