BROWN SPIRITS REPORT: RÉMY COINTREAU Rémy records ‘excellent performance’
Rémy Martin’s strong momentum in the Americas, increased private consumption in Greater China & travel retail and ‘robust growth in Russia’ all contributed to positive results for the Rémy Cointreau Group which registered a +4.7% increase in nine-month sales to €836.7m ($888.4m), as it prepares to report its full 2016-17 fiscal year results. Doug Newhouse reports.
of growth in it popular markets of Russia/CIS and Greece, along with ‘continued strong momentum in Central Europe’. This was most notable due to the launch of the new ‘12 Stars’ bottle. A good 9m performance was
also recorded for Mount Gay rum in the US, Barbados and the UK, while St-Rémy brandy experienced a small decrease due to a voluntary reduction in low-end volumes by the company.

months of its fiscal year while it was preparing to report its full-year result as this report went to press. Total sales reached €836.7m
($888.4m) in its first nine months, with reported growth of +4.7% in this 2016-2017 financial period. The drinks company said that sales
growth was driven mainly by group brands (+9.1%/organic basis). However, it experienced a fall in
sales by its partner brands (-15.3%/ organic) as its ongoing performance continues to be compared with last year when it still had the distribution contract for the Charles Heidsieck and Piper Heidsieck Champagne brands. Nevertheless, the strong 9-month
performance was helped by sales upturns in the Americas and Asia Pacific regions, with the latter recording a much needed ‘solid

recovery’ in private consumption in Greater China – as well as some improvement in travel retail trends. The company added that a more
contrasting performance played out in Europe, the Middle East and in African regions, with Russia, Central Europe, the UK and South Africa all contributing to the group’s ‘strong momentum’. More specifically – and
encouragingly – management pointed to ‘an excellent performance’ from the House of Rémy Martin, which continues to count the duty free and travel retail market as its third largest revenue contributor. The company said: “The division
also benefited from remarkable mix effects over the period, the result of investments in the highest-range categories in the Rémy Martin portfolio: the launch of Louis XIII Le Mathusalem, L’Odyssée d’un Roi project, the opening of a Louis XIII store in Beijing and the launch of the new Rémy Martin XO.” Turning to liqueurs and spirits,
this division (+4.1%) was said to have been driven by a solid increase in the company’s main brands. The Metaxa line apparently
performed ‘robustly’ throughout the 9m period with the resumption

with all its brands continuing to deliver strong double-digit growth in the first 9m – especially in its main markets including the US, Europe and travel retail. [The company also pointed to ‘satisfying
growth over the period’ for its Cointreau liqueur brand-Ed]. All of which appears to point
to a good year for the company within its key markets for Rémy Martin Cognac and Islay malt Scotch whisky in particular, with Rémy being very active in the DF&TR market in particular. The most recent example saw
the company showcase its Rémy Martin brand with Lagardère Travel Retail in its very first pop-up shop at Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport Terminal E S4 last January. This featured ‘The Opulence Revealed’ table, comprising a multi-sensory, interactive tasting experience centred around the company’s Cellar Master’s Selection which is exclusive to travel retail – namely Cellar n°16 and Cellar n° 28. Of course, this event was also
taking place on the Cognac side in the same month that Rémy really ramped up its brown spirits offerings with the creation of its
