BROWN SPIRITS REPORT: PERNOD RICARD
Pernod Ricard’s Asia malt trail sates demand… and creates new appeal
Nodjame Fouad, Marketing Director Pernod Ricard Travel Retail Asia Pacific, tells Luke Barras- Hill that the group’s single malt whisky portfolio continues to perform strongly in the region.
D
espite acknowledging the ‘uncertain environment’ facing Pernod Ricard this
year in the company’s most recent half-year 2016/17 sales and results, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Alexandre Ricard was nonetheless adamant that the world’s number two wines & spirits firm would continue supporting its priority markets, brands and innovations. A marginal +2% increase in
reported sales to reach €5,061m ($5,354m) was hampered by foreign exchange effects – particularly a -13.6% hit on the Japanese yen. But Pernod Ricard appears to have
weathered a 2016 plagued by fiscal volatility, terrorism and unstable political regimes in certain corners of the world surprisingly well. Rewind to the beginning of 2016 and
the travel retail business experienced some difficulties, including a dip in net sales due to declining Chinese traveller spends, but that blip now appears to be reversing. “The business has been positively
impacted with growth seen in Korea after a difficult last year due to MERS and other challenges,” Nodjame Fouad, Marketing Director, Pernod Ricard Travel Retail Asia Pacific told TRBusiness. Despite the challenges of the past few years, the Asia/Rest of the World
segment posted growth of +1% to €2,040m ($2,158m) in HY12016/2017. Scotch continues to be a
powerhouse for sales in the region, with the single malt category witnessing real traction in response to a demand for more novelty and innovation. “We have recently introduced
The Single Malts of Scotland to Asia Pacific Travel Retail,” comments Fouad. “This is a grouping of some of
Pernod Ricard’s key single malts – The Glenlivet, Aberlour, Longmorn and Scapa – to distinguish the range’s Scottish heritage and set it apart from others in the market.”
Activations calendar Merchandising and activations in Asia Pacific travel retail, which includes tastings at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, support the range and educate consumers. Elsewhere, The Glenlivet has
introduced three Single Cask limited editions exclusive to travel retail: The Glenlivet Fore Burn Single Cask, The Glenlivet Watercairn Single Cask and The Glenlivet Tarland Single Cask, each with their own distinctive taste notes. Pernod Ricard Travel Retail Asia
Pacific is marking the launches with activations at key regional hub
airports until the end of June. “Travellers
to Taoyuan
International, Hong Kong and Singapore Changi Airport will have the opportunity to be immersed in themed activations and learn about the complexity and flavour profile of each single cask through sensorial tastings,” says Fouad. «
