Europe’s Airports address conversion rate challenge

Improving conversion rates and maximising yields on a per passenger basis in European airport retail was a crucial topic of discussion at the 26th Airport Commercial & Retail Conference & Exhibition.

traffic, which broke the 2bn mark in 2016, driven predominantly by the +6.7% contributed growth from EU airports. Most of the traffic growth took

place in the medium-sized airport segments, while the larger hubs and smaller regions underperformed. Looking to 2017, ACI Europe said

Nice gathered more than 400 senior airport executives, operators, brands and ancillary partners intent on driving non-aeronautical revenues. Hosted at the Hyatt Regency

Palais de la Méditerranée, Nice, 3-5 April, the conference theme was apt: “The average spend at Europe’s airports is just €10.38 – surely we can do much better.” In similar fashion to years gone

by, a welcome cocktail – this year sponsored by Dufry – provided delegates with the trademark

conviviality and networking opportunities that have come to form a hallmark of the ACI Europe events. It was perhaps fitting then that

Aéroports de la Côte d’Azur, with its familiar ‘joie de vivre’ warmth and hospitality, played host to this year’s event. As well reported by TRBusiness, Nice Airport is in the midst of a major renovation project across both its terminals, with Terminal 1 retail improvements completed last year, and Terminal 2 redevelopments set to conclude this May. Its vision is ‘to give passengers

the most remarkable commercial experience in Europe’… but only an update on the current state of the industry could add credence to this ambition. Olivier

Jankovec, Director

General, ACI Europe, commenced proceedings in earnest on day one with his usual informative address. He began by reiterating the sterling gains made in European passenger

it was overly surprised with the positive figures, which Jankovec put down to factors including 14 consecutive months of growth in the Eurozone, low oil prices and airlines adding additional capacity. Most of this intra-regional capacity is derived from low cost carriers at the expense of full service carriers. However, airlines face rising fuel

costs – of up to 20% – a decline in yields, and fluctuating exchange rates that could lead to capacity constraints in the coming months. Geopolitical turbulence, Brexit and the ‘new reality’ across the Atlantic are also causing uncertainty, alongside the threat of terrorism.

Cost reductions made Return on airports’ invested capital has, however, improved, as cost reductions have been made. “All in all, 47% of Europe’s

airports are loss-making, which is an improvement compared to 2013 when it was 60% – of course, a lot of those loss making are smaller airports,” he said, reminding delegates that 77% of airports handling under one million passengers are currently running at a loss. Beyond this year, more disruption

is expected, with low cost airlines expected to continue increasing their market share, although airline consolidation in Europe is
