VK Mumbai International Airport Ltd’s decision to award an exclusive eight-
year fashion contract to Flemingo International at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) is in addition and not related to DFS Group’s separate decision to change its concession arrangements and become a supplier to Flemingo/ Mumbai Duty Free in other merchandise categories [as reported on
TRBusiness.com-Ed]. This latest dramatic contract
award by GVK MIAL comprises a total of 13 shops over 130,000sq ft of space, with a contract start date at the end of April. This new offer will consist of a
main fashion space split into seven sections covering multiple fashion and luxury merchandise types over an initial layout, although shop spaces and passenger flows will be revised over the coming year and Flemingo was continuing to discuss its plans ‘with many brands’ as TRBusiness went to press. The seven aforementioned sections

will feature international fashion; fast/ accessories’ fashion; Indian luxury fashion; travel and luggage; jewellery; sunglasses; watches and electronics. Of particular interest to many
passengers will be the Indian luxury fashion, which Flemingo is launching as a brand new category at the airport, since most of its passengers are obviously Indian nationals. The retailer adds that it already
has many top Indian brandowners looking at moving into the airport, such as Pashma, Ezma and others.
More multi-brand retailing Against this background and in addition, Flemingo has confirmed that some of the brands that have confirmed they will be opening with this new offer include Swarovski, Montblanc and Hugo Boss. Commenting on this big new
development, Manishi Sanwal, Managing Director of Mumbai Duty Free commented: “This is a great opportunity to extend our reach of brands and space in the airport and to cross sell with our existing 50,000sq ft retail offer. “From our research we have
identified product and brand opportunities e.g. India top-end fashion and a wider range of electronics and accessories. However, we have an initial layout and intend to give more opportunities for multi brand retailing in larger spaces. “We already have strong relationships with many brands
Duty Free follows some big changes at the location recently, which were precipitated by celebrations back in February as the operation marked its third anniversary at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport’s Terminal 2. On the L&T side of the business
Mumbai Duty Free’s main departures walkthrough store now comprises 2,500sq m offering more than 130 products in single malt whiskies alone, with more than 95 Scotch brands from over 25 ‘Whiskies of the World’ regions. [India is a huge Scotch whisky market in particular-Ed]. As mentioned, DFS and Flemingo
have run the retail concession as an equal joint venture operation since 2008 until DFS’ recent decision to change its concession arrangements in India to become a supplier to the Mumbai Duty Free departures and arrivals operation. As reported exclusively by
TRBusiness.com,
the newly
restructured arrangement is now understood to have received the necessary approvals from GVK Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), although Flemingo senior management declined to comment. All of this change also comes at
the same time that GVK Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) Pvt Ltd – the Public Private Partnership joint venture between a GVK- led consortium and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) – has seen unprecedented passenger growth in both international and domestic traffic over the last four years. At the last official count in 2015-
16 airport management reported a total of 41.67m passengers at the location. «
