AKARYN Hotel Group THAILAND
As people become increasingly conscious of their carbon footprint, and sustainably selective about where they stay, a host of new eco-friendly hotels are banishing single-use plastic from their premises and implementing initiatives to protect the oceans and their natural surroundings. Known for launching Asia’s first single-use
plastic-free hotel, akyra TAS Sukhumvit, and recent winners of the ‘Green Steps’ award at the Responsible Thailand Awards, AKARYN Hotel Group is leading this charge in eco-luxury. The ideal option for style seekers with a conscience, the group has pledged to be entirely single-use plastic free in all six of its properties by June 2019, with two already leading the way; akyra TAS Sukhumvit Bangkok and akyra Manor Chiang Mai. This is in no small part thanks to the group’s Founder and Managing Director, Anchalika Kijkanakorn, who remains passionate about reaching her goal to become fully sustainable throughout the group. Eco-led efforts will include sourcing glass bottles and removing all single-use plastic from
the bars. In addition, stainless steel akyra water bottles are handed to guests on arrival, which can be refilled anytime during their stay at the self-service water stations. Shower gels and shampoos are presented in locally manufactured celadon containers filled with essential oils-based products and biodegradable bin bags are used in rooms. For those wanting to indulge in retail therapy, shopping totes await in the wardrobes. The group’s charity, the Pure Blue Foundation,
has been raising funds to aid multifaceted marine conservation efforts for the last decade. Initiatives include coral reef restoration in Koh Samui and marine turtle conservation at Phang Nga, near Aleenta Phuket and akyra Beach Club Phuket, via the turtle sanctuary in Thai Muang, where hundreds of endangered leatherback turtles have been raised and released. Aiming to educate a generation of eco-conscious
travellers, AKARYN is offering guests the chance to offset their carbon footprint by planting mangrove trees at the Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park, near the beachfront Aleenta Hua Hin.
