Grand Hotel Fasano LAKE GARDA, ITALY
The Grand Hotel Fasano is an idyllic five-star spa retreat located on the picturesque shores of Lake Garda on the edge of the Dolomites. It’s the perfect base from which to explore the amazing landscape of upper Italy
Nestled in the Northern Italian Alps between Milan and Venice, and bordered by majestic mountains and serene hillsides of vineyards, lemon trees and olive groves, it’s easy to see why many people choose scenic Lake Garda over a holiday at the beach. At over 50 miles long and 11 across at its
widest, Italy’s largest lake is a striking sight for hikers and bikers traversing the region’s many waymarked mountain trails, while its glittering waters and steady breeze attracts kitesurfers and sailors.
ON THE WATER Tour boats skim across its ruffled waters whisking visitors from pier to pier to see Roman remains and ruins, fairytale castles and sleepy villages or cobblestoned towns, while its pebbled beaches are hugged by fashionable restaurants and historic hotels. Among the best is the Grand Hotel Fasano, a neo-classical converted hunting lodge, situated
just five minutes from the dock in Toscolano- Maderno in scenic Gardone Riviera, close to the Vittoriale, home to Gabriele d’Annunzio, Italy’s ostentatious soldier-poet. Immersed in around three acres of verdant
sweeping parkland with private access to the lake, it’s no surprise that this stylish retreat was popular with Austrian aristocracy in the late 19th century.
ELEGANT INTERIORS Today, 75 rooms are spread throughout two elegant buildings: the original, intimate Villa Principe and the more recent property featuring some of the higher standard Grand and Family suites. All rooms are bright and spacious with marble bathrooms and all the mod cons including wi-fi and air conditioning, as well as a fully-stocked mini bar. Everything guests would expect of a five-star
hotel can be found at Fassano, with many of the rooms including a balcony overlooking the lake.
HEALTH AND HAPPINESS The hotel’s wellness centre has been extended to 3500sq metres to create one of the largest in Italy. Inspired by ancient Roman baths, it’s the perfect place to relax with three pools, two Jacuzzis, two saunas and five different saunas and Turkish baths. The Aveda Aqva spa takes a holistic approach
to rejuvenation offering a variety of massage and beauty treatments using only natural products, while the fitness room is a modern masterpiece containing the latest Technogm equipment and overlooking the lake.
KEEPING FIT For guests keen to exercise in the great outdoors, the hotel’s pier offers steps into the glittering water, while the concierge can arrange the hire of mountain bikes, ebikes, SUPs and kayaks. Lake Garda is famous for more than 600
miles of hiking trails for all levels, from beginners to professionals, and for those keen to
tee off, some of northern Italy’s most renowned golf courses, including Gardagolf and Arzaga, which was designed by Jack Nicklaus Jr, are just are a short distance away. For guests who’d rather watch than
participate, time a stay to coincide with Mille Miglia. One of the world’s greatest endurance rally races, it covers 1,000 miles of Italian roads, starting in Brescia and passing through Florence, Bologna, Rome and Lake Garda.
TIME TO PARTY Festivals abound in Lake Garda. Festival del Vittoriale, for example, is a music, dance and circus festival at the Vittoriale amphitheatre, overlooking Lake Garda set amid magnificent scenery on the estate of the poet Gabriele d’Annunzio, and overlooked by Mimmo Paladino’s famous statue of a blue horse.
SIT BAX, RELAX Guests keen to take it easy can also relax — the hotel has an incredible range of vintage sports
cars to rent, while luxury skippered Frauscher motor boats can also be arranged. Head off to one of the region’s many museums, take the kids to an amusement park, or explore the wine regions of Lake Garda. However, with four restaurants and two bars,
many guests choose not to venture far. Cocktails and wine are best enjoyed on scenic
La Terrazza overlooking the lake, while on a breezy day, the cosy Gin Lounge beckons, with more than 100 types of gin to be sampled.
GOURMET CUISINE Ristorante Magnolia, open for lunch, serves Mediterranean cuisine in a garden setting, while La Darsena Shore Club features tapas with spectacular lake views. In the evening, Italian cuisine can be sampled
in the relaxed Ristorante Il Pescatore, or for a special occasion, head to the elegant Il Fabiano to dine in a beautiful dining room with original 19th-century ceilings, feasting on traditional local specialities with a modern twist.
Don’t miss Verona, just 90 minutes’ drive from the hotel, home to the second-biggest wine festival in the world and the famous opera festival
