Home to the most visited cave in Europe and the largest cave castle in the world, Postojna Cave Park is a leading tourist destination. Visitors can explore the 15-mile cave system, shaped over the aeons by the Pivka river. Just like the world above, Postojna Cave boasts towering mountains, murmuring rivers and vast subterranean halls; the rich Murano-glass chandeliers hanging from the ceiling of the Dance Hall create an otherworldly fairytale atmosphere. The cave is full of dripstone sculptures, including the so-called ‘Brilliant’ — this huge bright-white stalagmite is a symbol of Postojna Cave and the Slovenian Karst. The cave itself, meanwhile, holds special


significance as the cradle of speleobiolog (the study of subterranean fauna). It was here that the first cave-dwelling creature was found in 1831 — the Leptodirus hochenwartii cave beetle. Much of the attention, however, is given to the olm (Proteus anguinus), an aquatic salamander, once believed to be baby dragons. Three years ago, olms were seen hatching in Postojna Cave.


Blossoming under the careful supervision of the cave’s biologists, the 21 creatures are alive and well today. Visitors can view the olms on a visit to Postojna Cave or in the Vivarium, the subterranean zoo located by the cave’s entrance. Those wanting to discover more should head to the Expo Cave Karst exhibition, which offers an interactive way to learn about cave life and the creation of the karst phenomena. 800-year-old Predjama Castle, the world’s largest cave castle. It’s considered an medieval miracle and is often ranked among the world’s most magnificent castles. Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle are world-


class natural and cultural attractions. Nearby, in the park’s unspoilt nature, lies the four-star Hotel Jama. The renovated hotel from the 1970s allows visitors to explore the secret rooms used for wiretapping and monitoring by the former socialist regime. Hotel Jama is an excellent starting point for day trips to Ljubljana, Bled, the Slovenian coast, Trieste and even Venice.
