Ecologically-minded and contemporary yet classic in style, Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp blends in sensitively with the dramatic African mountain landscape and. Situated uniquely inside the national park, guests are only minutes away from the start of a gorilla trekking adventure. Located in one of the remotest areas of Africa,
these comfortable canvas spaces are dressed with indigenous prints and furniture made from natural materials. Each tent has a spacious stone- walled bathroom and a free-standing bath for a relaxing soak after a day’s trekking. Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp’s communal
area features a lounge with a bar and dining area. Come dusk, guests gather around the central campfire and swap stories of that day’s adventures. Mealtimes are a highlight of the day; expertly prepared dishes promise simple flavours and showcase fresh local ingredients. Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp is nestled deep
inside Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in southwest Uganda that’s home to almost half the world’s mountain gorilla
population. With a very limited number of permits available each day, trekking here offers the intrepid traveller the chance to enjoy an intimate and more adventurous level of safari. Accompanying guests on each trek are expert
guides who are able to explain the etiquette involved in meeting a silverback. In addition to gorillas, Bwindi is also home to rare forest elephants, giant forest hogs and 11 kinds of primates such as red tailed and blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus and baboons. Guests at Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp can
also learn about and interact with the local Batwa people, the oldest inhabitants of the Great Lakes region of Central Africa. The visit includes the chance to see a music performance too. With a focus on cultural exchange, this is as much about giving back as it is learning. Sanctuary Retreats works alongside a number
of local community projects, which can be visited by guests, including the Bwindi Community Hospital and Nursing School, Ebenezer Primary School and the Bwindi Women Bicycle Enterprise.
