PARTNER CONTENT FOR THE AMERICAN COLONY HOTEL

The American Colony Hotel JERUSALEM, ISRAEL

Guests of the American Colony Hotel have long described it as truly exceptional. The landmark heritage hotel in the heart of Jerusalem — just a short flight away from most European cities and only 50 minutes from the sunny beaches of Tel Aviv and the rejuvenating waters of the Dead Sea — provides an enchanting blend of authentic splendour, tranquillity and comfort. Plus, it’s in an awe-inspiring city; one that’s holy to three religions and overflowing with both ancient sites and modern attractions. The legendary oasis emerged from an intriguing

series of dramatic historic events laden with tragedy, courage, compassion and the triumph of spirit. In 1873, Horatio Spafford, together with his

wife Anna and their four little girls, decided to leave Chicago for a holiday in Europe, after aiding many families devastated by the Great Fire. Anna and the children went on ahead and boarded the luxury liner SS Ville du Havre. Tragically, the steamer sank and Anna alone survived — all four of the children perished.

The devout couple, rendered distraught by

the catastrophe, resolved to dedicate their lives to Jerusalem and its people. They and a group of friends resettled there in 1881. Their small community was later joined by Swedish and American members. The growing community moved to a

magnificent residence, once the property of Pasha Effendi El Husseini. He built remarkable winter and summer rooms for each of his three wives and then rooms six and 114 for his fourth and favourite wife, with the hope of producing an heir, but none was forthcoming. In despair, he sold the building, but his own magnificent living quarters and those of his wives are now part of the hotel. The colonists engaged heavily in charity work

and a variety of new industries including farming, botany and photography, and ran a school and a hospital whose charitable work continues today. The American Colony Hotel, a member of The

Leading Hotels of the World, is an integral part of Jerusalem’s history. No visit here is complete without the American Colony experience.
