Santani KANDY, SRI LANKA
Set in the hills above Kandy and overlooking the Unesco-listed Knuckles Mountain Range, Santani is a purpose-built wellness retreat designed around space and simplicity. It was the first dedicated luxury wellness retreat in Sri Lanka and remains the country’s only wellness resort to hold a Michelin Key. From the beginning, Santani has focused on a
straightforward idea: many of the pressures people feel — fatigue, stress, poor sleep — are cumulative, and change requires addressing their underlying causes. Its approach draws on ayurveda alongside contemporary medical insight, with an emphasis on prevention and sustainable habits. As the retreat approaches its 10th year in 2026,
its philosophy feels aligned with a wider shift toward long-term health. Long before longevity became a common talking point, Santani’s programmes centred on practical foundations: consistent sleep, balanced nutrition and stress management. The team refers to this as Adaptive Wellness, supporting the body so it can respond to the demands of everyday life.
Each stay begins with a consultation to assess
individual constitution, lifestyle and goals. From there, a personalised plan is developed, which may include massage and bodywork, guided meditation, yoga, hydrotherapy and a tailored meal plan. Nutrition follows the ayurvedic principle of Rasa Haya — the six tastes — to create balance without unnecessary restriction. The intention is not indulgence, but recalibration, with guests leaving with tools they can realistically maintain at home. The setting plays an important role in this
process. Built into the hillside, the spa is arranged across three levels, encouraging slower movement. There’s no background music, and treatment rooms are open to the air, allowing natural sounds and shifting light to shape the experience. Architecture is deliberately restrained, keeping attention on rest and reflection rather than distraction. A decade on, Santani continues to offer a considered approach to wellbeing, with thoughtful guidance, restorative treatments and an environment that supports genuine pause.
