Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa HANMER SPRINGS, NEW ZEALAND

Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa has evolved from a modest bathing site into one of New Zealand’s most distinctive wellness destinations. Framed by forested hills and crisp mountain air, the village offers a rare balance of restorative calm and outdoor adventure, with the thermal complex forming its social and cultural centrepiece. The story of the springs reaches back to Māori

legend. The famed explorer Tamatea is said to have called upon the Ariki of the Northern volcanoes to send fire south creating the geothermal waters known as Te Whakatataka O Te Ngarehu O Ahi Tamatea, meaning ‘Where the ashes of Tamatea’s fire lay’. Archaeological evidence of ancient umu (earth ovens) confirms the Hanmer Springs basin as a significant stopover for those journeying in search of the precious pounamu stone, a narrative that continues to shape the village’s sense of place. Established as a public bathing facility in the

1880s and remaining in community ownership under the Hurunui District Council, the pools are a rare example of a large-scale, council- owned thermal resort in New Zealand. In 1960,

local residents purchased the complex to secure its future — a milestone that still defines its community-driven ethos. Today, the complex comprises of 22 outdoor

pools, each offering a distinct sensory experience. The Cascade Pools combine five geothermal pools (37-42C) with boulder terraces, native plants and waterfalls. The sulphur pools — the hottest at up to 42C — draw water from the thermal bore without chlorine, a rarity in modern spa complexes. The adults-only AquaTherapy pools (36-37C)

support muscular recovery, while the Hexagonal Pools remain the geothermal heart of the complex. Families gravitate toward the Activity Pool, home to the Tuatara slide and tipping bucket, while thrill-seekers are drawn to the Conical Thrill — at 13.5 metres, it’s New Zealand’s tallest water slide. Beyond the pools, Hanmer Springs village offers

boutique shopping, artisan eateries and access to forest walks and mountain bike trails. Cuisine reflects the regional produce, from local

lamb to North Canterbury wines, with relaxed cafes and restaurants providing hearty post-soak fare.
