PAID CONTENT FOR BANYAN TREE HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO

Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto KYOTO, JAPAN

Set in the wooded hills of Kyoto’s eastern district, Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto occupies a rare position — within walking distance of some of the city’s most revered landmarks, yet removed from their intensity. The Unesco-listed Kiyomizu-dera temple lies just 10 minutes away on foot, while quieter paths connect to lesser-known temples often missed by day visitors. Higashiyama remains one of Kyoto’s most

atmospheric quarters. Traditional confectionery stores, artisan workshops producing elegant Kiyomizu-yaki ceramics, and small teahouses preserve centuries-old customs. Early mornings reveal a different rhythm — the sound of temple bells echoes through the hills and mist settles among maple and cherry trees. In spring, sakura softens the slopes; in autumn, fiery foliage transforms the forest. Architecture defines the property’s identity.

Designed under the supervision of Kengo Kuma, the hotel draws inspiration from the aesthetic philosophy of Noh theatre, where shadow, restraint and spatial rhythm shape perception. Timber,

natural stone and layered textures create interiors that are immersive yet controlled. Guest rooms reinterpret the traditional

ryokan through a contemporary lens. Some accommodation options feature tatami flooring crafted from woven igusa rush, releasing a subtle fragrance. Each room is equipped with a hiba wood bathtub; when filled, the aromatic cypress releases a scent long associated with purification rituals. Bathing becomes ceremonial rather than functional. Wellness is central to the experience. Kyoto

isn’t known for natural hot springs, making the presence of onsen water within city limits notable. A public onsen bath allows guests to immerse themselves in mineral-rich waters, while several rooms feature private onsens. At the Banyan Tree Spa, suites feature private onsen bathtubs and steam saunas. Banyan Tree’s treatments nourish the skin while promoting relaxation. Restaurant Ryozen celebrates seasonal

Japanese cuisine with ingredients sourced from Kyoto and across the country. Presentation reflects the principles of balance and harmony.
