PAID CONTENT FOR RELAIS HISTÒ HOTEL & SPA

Relais Histò Hotel & SPA PUGLIA, ITALY

Set within 173 acres of Mediterranean parkland overlooking the calm waters of the Mar Piccolo lagoon, Relais Histò Hotel & SPA offers a tranquil retreat in the heart of Puglia. Located just outside Taranto, one of southern Italy’s oldest cities, the property occupies the restored remains of an ancient Greek and Roman settlement. During renovation, the ruins of a three-nave basilica and a Roman aqueduct were brought back to light, grounding the hotel in layers of history that continue to shape its atmosphere today. Now home to 48 rooms and suites, the five-

star retreat balances historic architecture with contemporary comfort. Vaulted ceilings, pale stone walls and expansive courtyards reflect the region’s traditional masseria style, while interiors introduce a softer, more modern aesthetic. The result is a space that feels both rooted in the past and attuned to the expectations of contemporary travellers. At the heart of the property lies a 2,000sq-metre

spa inspired by the rituals of ancient Roman thermal baths and the philosophy of slow wellbeing. Indoor and outdoor thermal pools,

a hammam, saunas and quiet relaxation areas are set within atmospheric stone interiors, where filtered light and natural materials create a calming environment. Treatments draw on Mediterranean ingredients, from mineral-rich salts to locally produced olive oil, offering a sensory connection to the surrounding landscape. Beyond the spa, the surrounding region reveals

a quieter, less-travelled side of Puglia. Taranto, founded by Spartan settlers in the eighth century BCE, is rich in archaeological heritage, with its historic island Old Town connected to the mainland by ancient bridges, while along the coast, the Mar Piccolo lagoon supports one of Italy’s oldest mussel-farming traditions, a practice that’s shaped local cuisine for generations. Dining at the hotel reflects these regional

influences. Seasonal vegetables, handmade pasta, local olive oil and freshly caught seafood form the basis of many dishes, with recipes rooted in both land and sea. Dishes featuring Taranto’s prized mussels are a particular highlight, offering a direct link to the lagoon just beyond the property.
