The Cavern Drakensberg Resort & Spa DRAKENSBERG, SOUTH AFRICA
When Bill Carte proposed to Ruth Blyth, he did so in a letter filled with conviction and hope: ‘Ruth, my darling, I plea as never before: put your trust in me, marry me and be my mate in building a home and farm second-to-none in South Africa.’ Those words became the foundation of a legacy that continues to shape The Cavern Drakensberg Resort & Spa. In October 1941, the newlyweds arrived in the
Drakensberg Mountains and settled at what was then the Cavern Guest Farm, a modest homestead without electricity or running water, but rich in promise. Their shared vision, as Bill wrote, was ‘to create beauty, to make the land more fertile, to make a living, and to leave the world a better place.’ From this beginning, a dream took root and grew across generations. Named after the Cannibal Cavern a short
distance from the hotel, The Cavern Resort & Spa lies in the foothills of the Northern Drakensberg Nature Reserve, adjacent to the Maloti-Drakensberg World Heritage Site. Surrounded by basalt peaks, indigenous forests and clear mountain streams, the setting feels both grounding and expansive.
It’s a scenic country drive to this spot between
Johannesburg and Durban. On arrival, the resort reveals itself as a place suited to romantic escapes, restorative retreats and active mountain getaways, balanced by warmth and a strong sense of place. Accommodation includes standard and superior
rooms set within landscaped gardens rich in indigenous flora and birdlife. In this undeveloped region of the Drakensberg, nights reveal exceptional star-filled skies, while days unfold at a natural pace. Guests may hike, ride horses, cycle mountain- biking trails or fish for trout at tranquil dams. Beneath an ancient fern forest, the Forest Retreat
Spa offers a restorative counterpoint to mountain life. Treatments use Esse, a South African organic skincare range, and are delivered by a locally trained team, reflecting the resort’s commitment to wellbeing and community. Environmental stewardship remains central to The Cavern’s philosophy. Decades of conservation have preserved indigenous ecosystems, with flowers in bloom, rich birdlife, and wildlife such as eland, baboons and mountain reedbuck still roaming the hills.
