The Children’s Court does not have a jury. A specially trained judge is in charge of making a decision in cases involving children. Unlike in adult courts, the public and press are not allowed, and children on trial cannot be named publicly.
Children under 18 found guilty of a serious crime should not be sent to an adult prison, but can be sentenced to serve time in the Oberstown Children’s Detention Campus.

In groups, discuss whether the purpose of prisons in Ireland should be: (a) to punish criminals by limiting their rights and making their lives unpleasant; or (b) to rehabilitate criminals, giving them a chance to gain an education or learn new skills.
