• Technological development: using new technologies to improve life for everyone, to solve problems and to create new opportunities.
• Environmental development: making sure that changes we make will not damage the local or global environment and are sustainable over time.
sustainable: ways of using and managing our resources that keep them available for future generations and cause as little damage to the natural world as possible
Most people can agree that changes should be carefully planned and thought out, but not everyone agrees on what those plans should be.
Planning for positive development is complicated. Some kinds of development have the potential to hurt other types. For example, a nuclear power plant in your community could have positive effects on economic development but very negative effects on environmental development.
In this chapter, we will begin to explore how those in charge plan for development and how we have a responsibility to aim for development that is positive and sustainable for our communities and our world.
