WHAT IS THE EU AND HOW DOES IT WORK? 27 4. Why is your role as a MEP important in European democracy?
I see my role as an MEP as being the people’s representative, as being their voice at the legislative table. The rise of extreme right-wing politics and anti- immigrant governments across the EU makes it even more important that MEPs stand up for those who are vulnerable, and that they challenge the rhetoric of hate and fear.
5. What advice would you give to any young people in Ireland who wanted to get involved in European democracy?
I would always encourage young people to educate themselves on political ideology, to inform themselves and decide on what they see as their values. By doing that, the way in which the EU Parliament is structured into political groupings and how that impacts on decisions taken becomes clearer.
For anyone who is considering a political career, I would suggest that they start with being an activist in a political party and to try and seek out work experience with elected representatives. Being involved in politics in the European Union does not always mean running for election – there are also real opportunities in policy, translation and communications.
